Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 Review: The Sliders Are Back

The editors would like to thank the allo.ua online store for the kindly provided smartphone for the review..Xiaomi smartphones are the most popular among geeks who prefer to explore the range as much as possible and get the most out of it for a reasonable price. The Redmi line flies like hot cakes. But the flagship products of the company are no less attractive, especially given the very attractive price compared to more promoted brands. By the way, it is worth highlighting the MIX series, which started out as a kind of experiment.

In fact, the first MIX kicked off the fashion for “frameless” smartphones and proved to be extremely interesting and unusual when it debuted. MIX 2 did not cause such a “wow” effect: there were very few changes. Then the company released a more successful MIX 2S, which we reviewed. Now to ggXiaomi Mi MIX has arrived with number 3, which is the newest in the line-up: the frame is even smaller, and the design itself has a slider mechanism.

The smartphone was presented last fall, but it only came to us recently. An updated version of Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G has already been presented with a new Snapdragon 855 processor, support for 5G networks and a battery increased to 3800 mAh. But I’m not sure we should expect it in the near future.

What is that?

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is a ‘bezel-less’ flagship smartphone with 6.39-inch AMOLED FullHD + display, 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 64-bit processor, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal memory, dual main camera from 12 megapixels, a dual front camera, which hidden with a slider, dual SIM support and a fingerprint scanner.

Why is this interesting?

The main feature of the line has always been minimal bezels around the perimeter of the screen. With each new model, they decrease, the screen takes up more and more space on the front panel. In the new MIX 3, the screen occupies 93.4%. From a technical point of view, this presents some difficulties: you have to place the sensors and the front camera somewhere. The most common modern option is a cutout at the top of the screen, as many manufacturers (including Xiaomi) currently do. But in MIX 3, there is no cutoff.

Everything new is well forgotten and old, and now the old-fashioned form factor of slider phones has come to the rescue. They decided to use it in MIX 3: the display unit shifts a bit and voila! Here they are, 2 front cameras with flash. In addition to the main function, you can assign actions to open the cursor. For example, launch the front camera. The screen is a huge 6.36 inch AMOLED made by Samsung with an elongated shape with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9.

What remains unchanged in MIX is high-end material. This time – the most powerful Snapdragon 845 processor available on the market until recently (smartphones with the 855 are just starting to go on sale), 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. There are 8/256 GB versions. The main camera is dual, with a bunch of possibilities, which we will talk about in more detail later. What can we find in the box?

The smartphone comes in a large square box made of thick black cardboard. As befits a flagship, there is no sinister impression. On the front there is only the designation of the MIX line, and on the back there is a sticker with the necessary technical information and a barcode.

Usually the scope of delivery of modern smartphones is not very interesting, but in the case of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 the situation is somewhat different. The company decided to add some nice bonuses. In addition to the smartphone, the box contains a power supply, a Type-C cable, a protective bumper (not uncommon for Chinese manufacturers, but useful), a Type C adapter to 3.5 mm headphone jack, a paper clip to eject the tray and a wireless charger for 10 Mar An extremely interesting bonus.

What does it look like and is it assembled?

At first glance, when the screen is off, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 looks more like a typical large modern smartphone. It is made of glass on the front and back and a metal frame. These are the first visual impressions. Actually the back is ceramic, but I don’t visually distinguish between glass and ceramic on smartphones, maybe you will get it right.

It looks healthy, expensive, but no surprises. But the impression changes immediately after turning on the screen: the bezels around the perimeter of the screen are really very thin. There is a bit more play at the bottom, but it’s also small. The screen with rounded corners conforms to the shape of the body of the smartphone. In addition to a huge display almost all over the front panel, on the front you can see a small LED indicator and a slim ear cup (actually not).

The whole unit with the screen is shifted slightly down by a slider mechanism and two front cameras with a flash and the same earpiece open to us. The notch on the display unit appears to be just a through hole. The magnetic slide mechanism works very clearly, but a little tight. They promise it will work “like new” even after 300,000 open-close cycles. The details fit well, the smartphone halves don’t wobble or wobble relative to each other, but dust collects a bit between them.

The mechanism causes aesthetic satisfaction when triggered, especially if you select the appropriate sound (this option is provided).

The layout of the buttons and everything in between around the perimeter of the frame of the smartphone is almost standard. Above – only an additional microphone.

On the right are the standard power and volume buttons.

Below is the Type-C connector, an external speaker (this is the only one on the smartphone) and a microphone.

On the left is a tray and an additional button. It is used to call up the Google Assistant voice assistant. The Chinese version has its own local version. By pressing the button twice, you can quickly turn on the camera. Actions can be reassigned in the settings.

Only two nanoSIMs can be installed in a smartphone, there is no room for a microSD memory card.

The ceramic back is shiny and instantly collects fingerprints, like any modern smartphone with a glass back. But it looks expensive. The fingerprint scanner is in the middle, the main dual camera with flash is in the upper left corner, the location is similar to the predecessor MIX 2S.

The camera module is similar to its predecessor. It protrudes slightly from the surface of the smartphone and is located vertically. Two camera lenses and a flash in between.

The smartphone turned out to be heavy, just over 200g, but thanks to that and nice materials it feels like an expensive thing in the hand. We have a classic black version, there are more interesting blues and greens. The complete bumper is quite good, both in quality and visually does not cause rejection.

What is the quality of the screen?

The smartphone has a Samsung AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.39 inches and a resolution of 2340 x 1080 (aspect ratio 19.5: 9), pixel density – 403 ppi, it occupies 93, 4% of the front panel. And it is without any cutting. They promise a maximum brightness of 430 cd / m2 and a peak value of 600 cd / m2.

Visually, I liked the picture a lot, subjectively the light margin is really decent. Of course, at certain angles the color white turns slightly greenish like all modern AMOLEDs. There is an always-on display function: the clock, date and notifications are displayed on the off screen. The customizations are minimal but better than nothing.

Support for the declared color gamut DCI-P3 and HDR. In the display settings there is a reading mode, a night mode with the ability to automatically turn on according to a schedule, wake up with a double tap, adjust the resolution (you can reduce it to save battery), adjust the font scale and color display settings. There are three modes: automatic (automatically adapts to ambient light), high contrast, and standard. You can adjust the color temperature.

The maximum brightness and contrast do not change significantly depending on the mode, the color rendering is more noticeable. In standard mode, the maximum brightness was a very impressive 472,493 cd / m2, especially since it is AMOLED. The color gamut is close to sRGB, and the color rendering was found to be very good: the bias towards cold shades is minimal: the color temperature varies from 7000 to 7500K (with the reference 6500), and the error of color ΔE does not exceed 10.

In enhanced contrast mode, the maximum brightness hardly changed: 473,797 cd / m2, the color reproduction turned out to be more saturated, less natural, with a slight bias towards cool undertones. The color gamut is significantly wider than sRGB.
