LG 34WK95U Review: 34 Inch Screen With Nano IPS-matrix 5120×2160 Resolution And HDR

LG 34WK95U Review – LG’s lineup at the moment includes many monitors of different classes and designs, including gaming, budget, premium 4K, curved, flat. Today we have one of the high-end monitors of the moment LG 34WK95U, in which the company has collected most of the possible modern technologies that are in the manufacturer’s arsenal. It is positioned as the ultimate solution for professional photographers and video editors. Let’s see how good he actually is.

What is that?

LG 34WK95U – 34-inch monitor with 10-bit Nano IPS array, 5K2K UltraWide resolution (5120×2160), 60Hz refresh rate, 178 ° viewing angles, declared maximum brightness of 450 cd / m2 (600 cd / m2 peak) , HDR support and matte anti-reflective coating.

Why is this interesting?

LG 34WK95U is positioned as a photo and video processing solution, which means that the image quality requirements are higher than in multimedia or gaming models. The monitor uses a 34-inch matrix with a 21: 9 ratio and an unusual UltraWide 5K2K (5120×2160) resolution. If it’s simpler, then it’s if you add an additional 33% of the area to the side of a 27 inch 4K monitor. It will be very convenient when processing 4K video, you can see the whole image plus the toolbar.

The so-called Nano IPS matrix is used (we will understand in more detail what it is below), which has a color gamut of 98% of the DCI-P3 color space and 135% sRGB. The monitor supports HDR and is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified, the one of the requirements of the standard is a peak brightness of 600 cd / m2. The maximum screen brightness is 450 cd / m2, the static contrast is 1200: 1. Ports include DisplayPort, 2xHDMI, 1xThunderbolt 3 (including the one with the ability to power a connected laptop) and a USB 3.0 hub.

Bonuses include a built-in 2x5W audio system and a game mode with Dynamic Action Sync technology to reduce input lag. Although considering the resolution and refresh rate of 60Hz, gaming is not the main feature of the monitor. 1xThunderbolt 3 (including the one with the ability to power a connected laptop) and a USB 3.0 hub.

What’s in the box?

The set includes the monitor itself, a power cable (integrated power supply), DisplayPort cables, Thinderbolt 3, a USB port to connect a hub, several clamps and a stand for neat management and documentation Cables.

What does the LG 34WK95U look like?

The monitor looks strict and neat, yet very stylish. The whole front panel is a plane with anti-reflective coating, when turned off it looks like a solid black surface. The frames are thin on all four sides. The minimalism of the appearance is added to the complete lack of markings on the front, LG even decided to remove the logo, which is usually located below the screen.

There are no shiny parts in the monitor, all the plastic is matte. The front part is black, the back is white.

The stand is wide, made of metal with a silver plastic overlay and a small logo on the right side. It is made in the form of a thin part of the circle, LG called it Edge-ArcLine. It looks elegant anyway.

The whole rear part is white, matt. In the middle there is a platform for fixing the feet, to the left of which are the connectors.

The platform with connectors is slightly recessed, which will be convenient in case of wall mounting (it is provided by design).

Below is a five-way joystick to adjust the monitor. LG has used this solution in its monitors for a long time. Simple and quite practical. On the sides – perforation, under which there are stereo speakers.

The appearance of the LG 34WK95U turned out to be as practical as possible: nothing superfluous, at the same time it looks stylish and versatile.

What about usability, tuning and connectors?

The design of the monitor and stand is familiar, without any exotic features. Only basic height and tilt, rotation, and portrait orientation settings are not provided. Monitor height adjustment range – 110 mm.

All ports are located in a small area in the recess to the left of the leg support. Among the connectors are two HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, Thunderbolt 3 with Power Delivery support, two USB 3.0 ports (plus USB 3.0 Type B to connect a hub) and a headphone or speaker output.

You can use the OSD menu, controlled by a joystick, to control monitor settings. On the first click, the OSD quick settings menu appears, from which you can change the signal source, monitor operating mode, access monitor settings or simply turn it off.

In the extended menu there is a switch for preset picture modes, manual settings for color rendering, brightness, contrast, a bunch of additional settings including how the USB ports work, switches for Super Resolution +, DFC functions.

For a PC there is an OnScreen Control application, which, using special modes, allows you to divide the screen into different versions, perform almost all the same settings as using the on-screen menu and also to “bind” certain parameters to the applications. As a result, the monitor itself switches when the corresponding application is launched:

And what about the image quality?

The monitor uses an AH IPS matrix with a diagonal of 34 inches, W-LED backlighting and a resolution of 5120×2160. The bit width is 10 bits, but it is an 8 bit + FRC variant. Supports HDR, the monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified. The monitor’s secret weapon is its proprietary Nano IPS technology.

To describe it as simply as possible, a layer of nanoparticles is applied to the W-LED backlight of the screen, which absorbs light with a certain wavelength. For example, some shades that distort the image somewhat. This improves color accuracy. Matrices with Nano IPS have a much wider color gamut than usual: they promise up to 98% of the DCI-P3 color space and up to 135% sRGB.

The matrix has a frequency of 60 Hz, a response time of 5 ms, viewing angles of 178 ° horizontally and vertically, a maximum declared brightness of 450 cd / m2 and a peak brightness of 600 cd / m2 (the latter is one of the conditions of the VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification). The photo is superb, the viewing angles are maximum.

The monitor is not curved and there are no critical irregularities in the backlight and flares. We measured the performance of the monitor in the preset modes, the performance is very close to that shown. On HDR, the maximum brightness was 581.694 cd / m2, the black background brightness was 0.507, and the static contrast ratio was 1147: 1. In user mode, the maximum brightness was 432.372 cd / m2.

In DCI-P3 mode, the monitor shows the corresponding color gamut, which is significantly wider than sRGB, but the image becomes a little blue.

All measurements were taken at factory settings, without correction. No one forbids adjusting the image to your needs, even if everything is already very good.

What additional options are there?

As already written above, the working environment can be divided into different configurations from multiple windows, which is quite convenient for such a screen size and resolution. The built-in speakers might not be a substitute for a good sound system, but they sound surprisingly loud and of good quality, they will be more than enough for watching movies.

Among the useful functions, it is possible to charge a laptop from a monitor (85 W) and transmit an image via the same cable. It is very convenient, you do not need to additionally connect your laptop to an outlet.

The monitor is equipped with a light sensor and, if desired, you can activate automatic brightness adjustment. Of course, there are exclusive image enhancement technologies. Including Digital Fine Contrast (DFC), which (in theory) makes the image more contrasted, the Super Resolution + function to increase the clarity of the image.

There is a game mode with Dynamic Action Sync technology to reduce input lag, although the monitor itself is not positioned as a game. For hardcore gamers, a 60Hz refresh rate will not be. sufficient, but sometimes playing is quite comfortable.

In the dry residue

The LG 34WK95U monitor is a great all-rounder for a ton of use cases. Large diagonal, high quality resolution and matrix with wide color gamut, high quality factory calibration and HDR support allow it to be used for both photo and video editing, simple office work and for entertainment purposes such as watching movies or playing games.

Although the latter is only for casual players who play sporadically to relax. The monitor looks very stylish, equipped with a USB hub and a full set of modern video inputs including Thunderbolt 3 with the function of charging external devices. This will allow you to simply connect the laptop to the monitor with only one cable and to work (of course, if the laptop supports Type-C charging). As expected, the LG 34WK95U will be in demand for an impressive amount. The monitor will go on sale in April; the price will be 40 000 UAH.
