ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP Review: Mobile Monitor With Battery And USB Type-C

ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP Review – The line of ASUS Zen gadgets is not limited to laptops and smartphones. Among them are more exotic devices, such as portable monitors like the ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP, which came to the editorial staff of gg . The category itself is relatively new and somewhat specific. Let’s try to understand who can benefit from such a gadget and how good the experimental MB16AP is in this regard.

What is that?

ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP is a 15.6 inch portable IPS monitor with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, the ability to connect via Display Port (Type-C) or USB, powered either from a signal source or from a ” an integrated battery for 4 hours of autonomy.

What’s in the box?

The monitor comes in a large black cardboard box with a nice print. Inside – the monitor itself, the power supply, the Type-C cable, the Type-C to Type-A adapter, the foldable stand cover, the pen-shaped stand (in fact, it’s is the pen) and documentation.

Who needs such a monitor?

For starters, it would be nice to know who the portable monitors are for and what you can do with them. Many people at work use two or sometimes three monitors. Of course, traveling with a laptop in this case will be somewhat unusual, and for more comfortable work you can take a similar portable monitor. It’s not uncommon for programmers to use an additional monitor in a portrait orientation so that they can see more code on a page.

In addition, recently, desktop modes of operation have appeared in some smartphones, or simply by duplicating the desktop on a connected monitor. So, you can find a use for such a gadget and it will be extremely useful for a certain audience.

What does it look like and what about the design?

The monitor itself is made in the best traditions of ZenBook laptops – a metal casing with trademark concentric grinding and the ASUS logo in the middle. The case is small: 359.7×226.4 and the thickness is only 8mm. The monitor weighs 800g, so it is very convenient to carry it. The perimeter of the screen is matte black plastic, and at the bottom is a silver strip with control buttons and the ASUS logo.

On the left, there are two round buttons for adjusting the monitor using the on-screen menu.

On the right is a hole for a pen-shaped holder and a power button with LED indicator.

The only connector is located at the bottom left. This is Type-C for signal transmission and electrical connection.

The bezels around the screen are thin, the screen itself has a glossy finish, but without a sensor. Apparently, this decision was dictated by the need for greater strength during transport.

The set includes a magnetic protective case, which doubles as a transformable stand.

With its help, you can install the monitor both horizontally and vertically. In general, it is convenient and simple to use.

An additional option is a handle-shaped stand that fits into the hole at the bottom of the monitor. In general, this is also an effective option, but it did not seem very reliable to me.

What is the quality of the image?

The monitor uses an IPS matrix with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, promises a rather modest peak brightness of 220 cd / m2 and a static contrast ratio of 800: 1. The screen is not touch-sensitive, but the coating is glossy. . To reduce eye strain, ASUS has used flicker-free technology and a level 5 blue filter.

Viewing angles are maximum and the picture is pleasant, but the brightness is sufficient only for working in low ambient light. It’s quite comfortable at home, but it won’t be enough under bright lights. There are different display modes including Standard, Game, Theater and customizable sRGB. In the latter, the brightness cannot be adjusted.

The measurements showed that the maximum brightness in “Standard” mode is 203.214 cd / m2, the black field brightness is 0.245 cd / m2, and the static contrast is 849: 1. At the same time, there is a minimal disadvantage of red, but the calibration is very close to the reference, the color temperature is about 7000K (with the reference 6500K), and the color error coefficient ΔE does not exceed 6. But the range of colors is slightly less than the sRGB light space.

In “Game” mode, the indicators are very close to “Standard”, both in terms of color rendering and brightness / contrast indicators (maximum brightness – 201,082 cd / m2, contrast – 834: 1).

The most accurate calibration in sRGB mode: all indicators are as close as possible to the reference values (except the color gamut, which does not reach sRGB), but in this mode the brightness cannot be adjusted and it is low: 97.6 cd / m2, black field brightness – 0.135 cd / m2, static contrast ratio – 723: 1.

What can he do?

To connect to laptop and desktop PC, you can use Display Port / Type-C or USB. For the latter option, you will need to install the DisplayLink driver, it is available on the manufacturer’s official website. Then it works like any regular monitor: you can duplicate or enlarge the screen. Supports automatic switching to portrait mode.

The smartphone can be connected with the supplied Type-C cable. The manufacturer recommends installing the DisplayLink application, although modern smartphones “start” with a monitor and without it. Models with desktop mode support are also supported (the Samsung Galaxy S10e immediately went into Dex mode). But for comfortable working, you still need to connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse: after all, the screen is not touch-sensitive.

When connected to PC / Laptop, you can choose whether the monitor will be powered by an external source or by the built-in battery. To control all of this, an on-screen menu is provided, which is controlled using two hardware buttons on the right. That’s not to say that this option is particularly convenient and obvious.

It is much more convenient to use the proprietary ASUS DisplayWidget app, which has absolutely all the settings, everything is done conveniently and clearly.

ASUS promises that the built-in 7,800mAh battery will last 4 hours of battery life. I got pretty much the same results at medium brightness. Support Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging, the corresponding power supply is included.

In the dry residue

ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP is too specific a device in its essence and it is extremely difficult to recommend or not to recommend it unequivocally. In this case, it’s worth starting with your personal needs: if you’re sure you need an extra portable monitor for regular trips or presentations, it’s definitely worth taking a closer look.

The monitor is compact, practical, works in landscape and portrait mode, is compatible with PCs and smartphones, looks good and is equipped with a very well calibrated IPS matrix. At the same time, it is equipped with a built-in battery, which will allow you not to drain your laptop battery on the road.

A small margin of brightness and a rather modest color gamut may not be suitable. In addition, in such a model, the sensor would clearly not be superfluous, especially when working with a smartphone.

ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP is not yet for sale, on foreign sites the price is $ 300, so far we only sell the previous model of MB16AC battery for 8800 UAH. Whether it is a lot or a little, it is difficult to judge why there are hardly any such monitors on the market (at least from A brands).
